I’m Jay, a lifelong cook, teacher, and storyteller who believes that food should be both good for you and good to you. I’ve always loved cooking for people — creating meals that bring them joy, spark conversation, and make them feel cared for.
This blog began with my girlfriend, Christina. She had her gallbladder removed years before we met, and she often struggled with food — not because she didn’t love it, but because so much of what was “safe” for her felt bland and boring.
One day, I asked why she kept eating things that made her feel sick. She smiled and said,
“Because the good-for-me stuff has no flavor.”
I took that as a challenge — and a promise.
I told her I’d prove that healthy, gallbladder-friendly food could be flavorful, satisfying, and absolutely delicious.
So I started experimenting, blending what I knew about cooking with a new purpose: creating food that heals without losing its soul.
That’s how The Restorative Raven was born — from love, curiosity, and a desire to make food that restores rather than restricts.
